SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The City of Scranton is investing in its small businesses with a new grant program designed to help owners spruce up their storefronts.
Eligible businesses can receive up to ten thousand dollars to cover half the cost of exterior improvement projects, including new windows, doors, signs, lighting, landscaping, and historically accurate restorations.
The city says the goal is to revitalize commercial corridors and encourage more investment in neighborhoods across Scranton.
“Our original facade grant program had real impact for local businesses,” Mayor Paige G. Cognetti said. “We are excited to bring this program back to help businesses across Scranton give their stores a fresh look and our business corridors a boost of energy.”
For business owners like Nada Gilmartin of the Tripp House, the oldest home in Lackawanna County, grants like these can make projects that once seemed out of reach a reality.
“These grants have just made more of an improvement in the community and inspire the community to know what can be done because we have no limits. It’s up to us. We can make all this happen,” said Gilmartin.
City officials announced the program at McCarthy Flowers, one of more than two dozen businesses that previously received façade funding through the American Rescue Plan Act.
