MERCER & LAWRENCE COUNTIES – Aqua Pennsylvania is conducting customer-owned service line inventory studies that are part of a statewide initiative to replace utility and customer-owned lead and galvanized water services in Lawrence and Mercer County.
Mahoning Township in Lawrence County and Farrell City and Mercer Borough in Mercer County will be surveyed. The studies which consist of approximately 1,720 customer-owned service line surveys, began in mid-June and are expected to last throughout the year.
Aqua Pennsylvania can use this inventory to find lead or galvanized service lines for replacement. Once the material is identified, Aqua works directly with the customer to replace the customer-owned portion of the line.
Customers are charged no direct cost through Aqua Pennsylvania’s Customer Lead Service Line Replacement Program. Customers are also provided a warranty for the completed replacement.
Utility-owned lines often extend from the water main in the street to the curb stop located at the curb or property line, whereas the customer-owned section extends from that curb stop into the customer’s home or building.
Marc Lucca, Aqua Pennsylvania President, says this work will provide future improvements for their customers.
“The work that we are doing now will provide long-term improvements for thousands of Aqua customers, Lucca said.
Aqua Pennsylvania has completed nearly 3,000 customer-owned service line replacements since 2024, including nearly 200 replacements in Lawrence and Mercer Counties.
That number is expected to continue to grow as Aqua advances its commitment to provide safe, reliable water throughout the community, according to a release.
Lucca explains that reliable water does not just come by chance.
“A project like this reminds us that clean, safe water isn’t by chance. It is the result of a strong dedication to serve our communities,” Lucca said.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PAPUC), all require the service line material inventory and replacement.
