In need of space on the 40-man roster after acquiring infielder Jacob Gonzalez and left-handed pitcher Brandon Eisert from the White Sox, the Pirates transferred shortstop Konnor Griffin to the 60-day injured list and designated right-hander Cam Sanders for assignment.
It’s a procedural move with Griffin, who was placed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday (retroactive to July 6) with a left ring finger sagittal back injury that will sideline him for 8-10 weeks and won’t return to the field until early September at the earliest. The 20-year-old totaled 59 games during his rookie season prior to his latest injury and hit .276/.332/.404 with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 25 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.
Sanders made nine relief appearances with the Pirates this season across five separate stints and posted an 8.68 ERA with 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
