(WHTM) – Pennsylvania state lawmakers are headed to the State Capitol for rare Friday and Saturday evening sessions as work on a budget deal comes together.

Officials hope to have a deal signed sometime Sunday afternoon; however, that comes with the usual cautionary tale that things can be tripped up at a moment’s notice.

Lawmakers are expected to have more money for K-12 public education and the rainy day fund will have to be tapped into to meet the price tag, which will surpass last year’s record $50 billion. Governor Josh Shapiro (D) requested $53 billion for this year’s budget, while Republicans are pushing to spend less.

The budget was due June 30 thought lawmakers have consistently missed that deadline in recent years. There was optimism this year that a deal would get done soon after the July 4 holiday.

A key issue that remains is skill games, which the state’s Supreme Court ruled are illegal slot machines. The court gave lawmakers 120 days to come up with a solution to the machines found in VFWs, gas stations, and bars across the state.
