The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a body was pulled from Lake Erie waters in Monroe County on Saturday evening.
County dispatch received a 911 call from a boater in the Point Mouillee State Game Area, southeast of South Rockwood, around 8:30 p.m. The caller said they saw what appeared to be a body floating in the water approximately 15 feet from shore of the Banana Dikes.
After members of the sheriff’s office dive team were activated due to the body being inaccessible from the dike, the body was recovered from approximately three to four feet of water. The body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for autopsy and identification.
This comes more than one week after the disappearance of a Michigan kayaker during Fourth of July weekend.
The Brownstown Township Police Department reported 30-year-old Jesus “Chewy” Sanchez went missing near Celeron Island, south of Grosse Ile, on July 3.
Police say Sanchez was kayaking with two friends on Lake Erie when a severe storm moved through the area as they were traveling towards Downriver Marina. 70 mph winds and 10 to 20 foot waves separated the kayakers after their kayaks capsized.
Authorities say the other two kayakers were rescued by passing jet skiers. Brownstown Township Police said due to weather conditions and lake currents, Sanchez could have drifted anywhere alone the Lake Erie Shore, including Michigan, Ohio and Canadian waters.
