Second Harvest Food Bank could soon get more money to help people in need.
County Executive Brenton Davis is trying to allocate up to $1 million to the food bank.
Erie County Council has been asked to consider a plan from County Executive Brenton Davis to allocate up to $1 million to the food bank, depending on how long this shutdown lasts.
County Council would still need to approve the request, but Davis is asking the community to step up and help the food bank as well.
Meantime, Democratic Candidate Christina Vogel, running for County Executive released a statement in response to Davis’ announcement.
According to Vogel, “With shutdowns at both the state and federal levels and ongoing confusion around snap benefits, too many Erie County families are facing unnecessary uncertainty. No one should have to worry about putting food on the table because of political gridlock. This is a time for unity and for those who can, consider donating food, money, or time to support the local organizations who are stepping up to meet this incredible need across Erie County.”
While davis’ plans to help the Second harvest Food Bank, Monday’s announcement doesn’t seal the deal, without approval from County Council.
Council Member, Rock Copeland released his statement in response to Davis wanting to donate a million dollars of county reserve funds. He said, “For a year I’ve been talking about the need for elected leaders to build resilience in our community. This issue didn’t just pop up the day before the election. The snap cliff has been coming for sometime. It’s frustrating to see this being addressed only after we’ve already fallen off the cliff. We deserve better.”
County Council will be meeting to further discuss the possibility of using reserve funds to help support those going without snap benefits.
The next county council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 6th.
