READING, Pa. — Reading Public Library says that the elevator at its main library is out of service until 2027.

Library officials say that the elevator is out of service due to ongoing mechanical issues and is expected to remain that way until January 2027.

“This was not a decision made lightly, but rather one of public safety. Over the last two months, repairs and outages of our elevator have become more frequent, deteriorating significantly in a short time span and therefore posing a safety concern for patrons and staff,” the library said on Facebook. “We are grateful to the City of Reading for their support in addressing this project, and will provide an update on the timeline as we are able.”

Library staff says that the Reading Library Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest branches are fully accessible.

You can request Main Library titles for delivery to any branch, and most of the services offered at Main (i.e. printing and scanning) are also available at these locations, officials said.

Curbside service will be offered at Main as well.

Officials say more details will be announced soon on what the curbside model will look like for a variety of services.
