BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bethlehem says all city pools will be closed Thursday, as the Lehigh Valley faces air quality issues due to smoke from wildfires in Canada.

Lessons will be rescheduled for Friday morning, Bethlehem Recreation said in a Facebook post.

The city’s Health Department noted in a Facebook post that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection declared a Code Red Air Quality Action Day for fine particulate matter Thursday.

A Code Red means the air is unhealthy for everyone, the city says.

To protect your health, the city’s Health Department says to:

Limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities.

Children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should avoid extended time outdoors and consider moving activities indoors.

Keep windows closed if possible and use air conditioning on recirculate if available.

You can also help reduce air pollution today by:

Avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Refraining from burning leaves, trash, or other materials.

Limit vehicle idling by turning off the engine when parked.
