The Yeadon Police Department has arrested a Philadelphia man in a fatal vehicle collision.
Courage Baker, 19, was charged in a crash that claimed the life of Desiree Maud Williams, 63, of Upper Darby on May 14 at South Lansdowne and Lincoln avenues.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. The victim was waiting at the bus stop when the crash occurred, resulting in her being struck, police said.
Baker is charged with homicide by vehicle, careless driving resulting in unintentional death and several traffic offenses.
He was arraigned by District Judge Keith Williams, who set bail at 10 percent of $1 million, which Baker was unable to post and he was committed to the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.
Baker’s lawyer Arik Tzvi Ben-Ari had no comment on the charges, stating, “We do not comment on ongoing cases.”
Yeadon Police Chief Henry Giammarco praised the collaborative investigative efforts of his department and the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division that led to the arrest.
Yeadon Sgt. Nicholas Tokonitz and county Detective James Reardon were the lead investigators.
“This arrest demonstrates what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together with a shared commitment to justice and public safety,” Giammarco said in a news release. “Through strong partnerships, diligent investigative work, and a common purpose, we are able to hold individuals accountable while serving the citizens of our communities.”
Giammarco reminded the public that careless driving can impact victims and the driver.
“Dangerous and reckless driving has devastating consequences. One careless decision can forever change the lives of innocent families,” he said.
The chief also asked the community to keep the family and loved ones of Desiree Williams in their thoughts and prayers as they continue to cope with this loss.
