Erie County Department of Health has confirmed seven cases of cyclosporiasis among county residents as of Thursday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than 1,645 confirmed cases nationwide since May 1, with another 5,100 potential or suspected cases under investigation. Cases have been confirmed in 34 states, including Pennsylvania.
Officials have not identified a single source, though early reports indicate lettuce or diced tomatoes may be contributing to some cases.
Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by a parasite. Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, stomach cramps and fatigue. It is commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water and is not known to spread from person to person.
Anyone who believes they may be infected should contact a primary care provider. Emergency care should be considered for signs of dehydration, including decreased urination, dark urine, dry mouth or dizziness.
