LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Voters are hitting the polls for Election Day 2025, and 28/22 News is following many key races in our area. Voters are casting ballots on everything from mayors, council members, and commissioners.
In the race for Scranton Mayor, the Incumbent Democrat, Paige Cognetti, is also saying she will run for Congress.
28/22 News Reporter Andy Mehalshick was at Scranton High School, which is one of the largest polling places in the city of Scranton.
Voter turnout is around 30%, which is par for the course for off-year local elections, and voters tell 28/22 News the Scranton Mayoral Race is front and center for them.
Incumbent Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, a democrat, is seeking a second term. She is facing Republican Patricia Beynon, and Independent candidates Gene Barrett and Rik Little.


Voters tell 28/22 News they want to make sure their voices are heard.
“Local elections, do you think in general, do you think people don’t pay attention that really impact your life?” Mehalshick asked.
“Absolutely. This is very important and Scranton Mayor race, for sure. Done. I did, I voted!” Scranton resident Carol Deininger exclaimed.
The polls close on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., and election officials say they usually see many voters come after they get off work.
