National Pennsylvania Day encourages residents to serve

SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – Monday is National Pennsylvania Day.

It’s an annual observance that encourages residents to serve their neighbors.

This year, America 250 PA has dedicated the theme to be “Pennsylvanians Helping Pennsylvanians” through acts of service.

Volunteers across the state today participated in a variety of projects, but specifically in fighting food insecurity through a partnership with Feeding Pennsylvania.

At Mercer County Food Bank, volunteers sorted goods to be packaged for underserved areas.

“I would encourage all states to do it. I think it’s really nice to have all of these folks who normally wouldn’t be coming in for a volunteer shift just here specifically for that day,” said executive director Becky Page. “I think it’s an educational tool and a really worthwhile activity.”

Over 500 volunteers helped out Monday to help serve 19 counties across Pennsylvania.
