READING, Pa. – For people experiencing homelessness, something as simple as taking a shower can be difficult. That’s why Refresh Berks launched its mobile shower program more than a year ago — bringing showers and basic hygiene supplies directly to those who need them.
“One of the biggest problems with the homeless community is getting to where they are, and they’re not always able to get around the city and get to different places,” said David Himes, vice president of Refresh Berks. “So, we thought if we have something mobile, we could come to them.”
Working with the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness, Refresh Berks has expanded to several locations across Reading. Now, the organization is adding a new stop.
“We finally have been able to get this spot that’s the Cherry Street parking lot,” Himes said. “So, we think that’s really going to help more of the south side of town, which we haven’t been going to yet.”
Visitors don’t need to bring anything. Thanks to donations from local churches and community partners, the mobile shower provides shampoo, soap, clean towels, socks and underwear.
“The best thing about it for them is sometimes they haven’t had a shower for a week, two weeks, something like that, so they’re very appreciative when we come out,” Himes said.
For organizers, the program is about more than providing a shower; it’s about restoring dignity and helping people through difficult circumstances.
“Just seeing people that, where they are in their lives — that usually through no fault of their own, usually through just circumstance — and there’s not always a way out for them. I just was inspired to help as much as I could and be a part of this organization,” Himes said.
