The Waldorf German American Federation was founded in May 1906 and partnered with Luzerne County to hold festivals at locations regionwide. In 1910, the Lackawanna group purchased 10 acres of land on East Mountain and constructed a clubhouse, park and athletic field. The overall goal was to promote the German language, art, literature and customs. In September 1911, the first German Day was conducted at Waldorf Park and has been a tradition ever since, with singing, dancing, food and good times. The Lackawanna County commissioners marked the day recently with a proclamation.
