SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Waverly Woodcrafts led a charcuterie board woodburning class at The Releafery in Scranton, giving participants a hands-on introduction to pyrography while they created personalized boards to take home.

Sarah Braddell, founder of Waverly Woodcrafts, said the workshop offered participants a different kind of creative activity while also giving them an opportunity to spend time together.

“So we are making personalized boards with either a monogram and wreath or a bee and wreath. I feel like paint-and-sip classes are really popular, so this is a nice change that gives people something different to do together. It is a different kind of class that many people have not taken before, and I think they really respond to it and enjoy it,” said Braddell.

Beyond the two featured designs, Waverly Woodcrafts offered other templates and allowed participants to request personalized artwork for their boards.

Braddell began woodburning in 2024 and started teaching classes about a year ago. Since then, she has brought them to shops, breweries, cafes and private homes across Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.

Braddell described pyrography as a lesser-known art form that can appear intimidating to beginners, but said it is accessible with patience and practice. She added that basic woodburning equipment is relatively inexpensive, making it easier for people to try the craft without a major investment.

The class cost $46 and included the board, tools and materials. Optional services included having designs pre-traced and completed boards oiled.

Waverly Woodcrafts, based in Waverly Township, creates custom woodworking and woodburned pieces and offers classes, custom orders and craft kits. Braddell said she hoped to eventually expand her classes to the Allentown and Philadelphia areas.
