Four members of the Erie Fire Department will represent the City of Erie this week as they compete in the Firefighter Challenge Northeast Region Classic at 300 South Main Street in Akron, Ohio, testing their skills against some of the top firefighter athletes in the region.
The Erie team, made up of Judah Gardner, Nate Gardner, Terry Sedney, and Marshall Hunsaker, will take part in one of the most demanding competitions in the fire service from July 23 to July 25 in Ohio.
The Firefighter Challenge is designed to simulate the physical and mental demands firefighters face on the job through a series of timed events that measure strength, speed, endurance, and determination.
Competitors will complete a challenging course that includes stair climbs, hose hoists, forcible entry, hose drags, equipment carries, and victim rescues.
The Northeast Region Classic also serves as a qualifying event for the 2026 U.S. National Firefighter Challenge Championship, which will be held in downtown Erie from September 23 until September 26.
As representatives of the host city, Erie firefighters will be competing not only for strong finishes in Akron but also for the opportunity to earn a spot on the national stage when the championship comes to Erie next year.
The 2026 U.S. National Firefighter Challenge Championship is expected to attract hundreds of competitors and thousands of spectators to downtown Erie, providing an opportunity to showcase the city while highlighting the skills and dedication of firefighters from across the country.
