A Scranton man grabbed a woman by the neck, shoved her against a refrigerator and then hit her in the face after an argument on Saturday, according to a criminal complaint.

After being asked to leave the Hilltop Manor apartment, Samad Lee Barnes, 30, picked up a metal chair from the porch and threw it through the back door, shattering the glass, police said.

Barnes faces charges of simple assault and harassment.

On Saturday at about 9:30 p.m., Scranton police were called to 862 Herbert St. for the report of a domestic dispute.

When officers arrived, they noted that the rear door was completely shattered, with a metal chair on the ground nearby.

Beverly Tate told officers the couple had been arguing over “something stupid” that quickly escalated and turned physical.

Tate said Barnes had left the scene but would likely return shortly because he didn’t have a vehicle.

She told officers Barnes had never hit her before.

Officers searched the apartment complex and surrounding area but weren’t able to locate Barnes. But he was taken into custody Sunday around 11 p.m., according to a police spokesperson.

Barnes was arraigned Monday before District Judge Kipp Adcock. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 29.

He remains in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Officers provided Tate with information about getting a protection-from-abuse order.
