A fight between family members escalated into an incident that saw a man shot and stabbed before he wrestled a firearm away from a woman at a home in Philly’s Lawndale section overnight, police said.

According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, a woman is in custody and a man has been hospitalized following an attack that happened during a fight between family members that happened at about 12:30 a.m. at an apartment along the 6600 block of Martins Mill Road.

At that time, he said, officers responded to a report of gunshots to find a scene at an apartment where blood and spent shells were discovered.

But, there was no victim at the scene.

Instead, a few minutes later and about four blocks away, on the 6200 block Rising Sun Avenue, officers tracked down a man who had been shot in the leg and stabbed in the back during an incident at that home.

Officers also recovered a handgun from this victim, he noted.

And, Small said, this 37-year-old man was conscious and talking.

In talking to this man, as well as two women who were at the apartment at the time, investigators believe the incident happened as a result of a fight that broke out between family members.

He said at some point in the evening, this victim became involved in a fight with the two women at the apartment — who were both his family members — when he was stabbed before one of the women pulled out a handgun and shot him.

However, Small said, the victim was able to wrestle the firearm away from the woman who fired the weapon and he fled the apartment with the gun before being discovered by police.

Following the incident, the man was hospitalized in critical condition while, Small said, the woman who fired the weapon was hospitalized in stable condition after suffering injuries to her face and head.

The woman who witnessed the incident, Small said, was also hospitalized with injuries to her head and face, but he didn’t immediately know the severity of her wounds.

The woman who, police believe, fired the handgun has been taken into custody following the shooting.

“We believe we have the shooter in custody and she is cooperating with police,” he said.

Small did not say what charges this woman may face as a result of the shooting.

But, he said the incident may have been captured on surveillance cameras in the area and investigators were working to review the footage as an investigation remains ongoing.
