The Luzerne County Historical Society will host Young Historians’ Day, an educational program designed to inspire children in grades K–8 to explore local history through hands-on activities, historical demonstrations, and interactive learning experiences.

The event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 at the historic Swetland Homestead, 885 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, providing young participants with a unique opportunity to experience history beyond the pages of a textbook or the walls of a classroom.

Held on the grounds of the 1803 Swetland Homestead, Young Historians’ Day will feature period-authentic games, living historians, historical crafts, and educational activities focused on the people, places, and events that shaped Luzerne County. Created as part of the nation’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the program encourages children to connect with history by discovering the stories of their own community.

“History comes alive when children have the opportunity to experience it firsthand,” said Mark J. Riccetti Jr., director of operations and programs. “Young Historians’ Day was created to provide an engaging and memorable way for students to explore the past, ask questions, and develop an appreciation for the history that surrounds them.”

The program is designed for children of all levels of historical interest, whether they are just beginning to discover the past or are already passionate young historians. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with historical interpreters, create crafts inspired by the past, participate in games from earlier eras, and learn about the daily lives of those who lived in Luzerne County generations ago.

Registration for Young Historians’ Day is $35 per child and includes all programs, crafts, games, a snack, and beverages. Lunch will not be provided. Each child who registers will also receive a coupon for free admission to the Swetland Homestead Open House on Sunday, Aug. 2, when accompanied by a paid adult admission.

Pre-registration is required, and attendance is limited to 30 children. Upon registration, parents will receive a required participation form by email to complete before the event.
