With many teams on a bye, there was very little movement from last week in this fresh edition of the Trib HSSN Top 5 in the state, with one major exception.
The three-year run as PIAA Class 6A champions is over for St. Joseph’s Prep.
The district and state power won every 6A state title since the classification began in 2016 with the exception of 2017 and 2021.
It also means that on the 10th anniversary of the 6A state championship game, this will be the first time the Hawks are not participating. They’ve won seven times and lost in the finals in 2017 to Pine-Richland and in 2021 to Mt. Lebanon.
The streak ended Saturday when LaSalle College knocked off St. Joe’s Prep for the second time this season, 24-14, in the Philadelphia Catholic League title game.
The Explorers have this week off and will battle the Philadelphia Public League winner for the District 12 crown next week.
With St. Joe’s Prep falling out, Easton from District 11 is the only new entrant into the rankings this week at No. 5 in 6A.
The top of each classification remains unchanged with LaSalle College in 6A, Pine-Richland in 5A, Susquehanna Township in 4A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A, Troy in 2A and Fort Cherry in A still at No. 1.
The district playoffs continue with quarterfinals, semifinals and even some championship games set for this weekend.
