BERKS COUNTY, Pa. – Gov. Josh Shapiro announced that planned ICE detention facilities in Berks and Schuylkill Counties will not be moving forward.
The Department of Homeland Security had purchased a warehouse in Upper Bern Township for $87 million back in February.
It faced bipartisan backlash from lawmakers and community members alike.
Many community members expressed concerns over the facilities’ impact on the water and sewage infrastructure, as well as the loss of tax revenue.
Shapiro has revealed two letters sent to state officials from ICE confirming the change.
It’s not yet known what will happen to the building.
