A Chester County man was arrested at the scene of a three-vehicle crash Friday morning on Interstate 176 in Robeson Township that killed two Reading men in another car and seriously injured the driver, state police said.

Paul Villanueva, 44, of Coatesville, who wasn’t injured, was taken into custody at the scene of the crash that happened shortly after 6 a.m. near the Green Hills exit of the southbound highway, troopers said. He was charged with homicide by vehicle and related offenses, troopers at the Reading station said.

Pronounced dead at the scene were Jose Cueva Sosa, 18, and Jose E. Uribe, 20, who were passengers in a car driven by Leandro Cortorreal Sosa, 44, of Reading. Autopsies are scheduled for Monday morning in Reading Hospital and are to be performed by forensic pathologist Dr. Neil Hoffman, Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel announced.

Cortorreal Sosa was taken to Reading Hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries, officials said.

According to investigators:

Villanueva was traveling in the right southbound lane and tried to move into the left southbound lane when the left rear of his car struck the right front of the Sosa car, causing that car to go off the left side of the road and into the grass median. The Sosa car struck an embankment and went airborne between the bridges that carry the travel lanes over a creek.

The car slammed into the northbound bridge abutment and came to rest on its roof in the ravine.

The Villanueva car stayed in the southbound lanes after initial impact before hitting the rear bumper of a third car, which came to rest on the southbound bridge. The striking car came to rest on the southbound shoulder. Neither driver was injured.
