PERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – Law enforcement saved a Pennsylvania man from losing $200,000 in an “elaborate scam” that cost the victim $30,000.

Pennsylvania State Police in Hamburg responded to a home in Perry Township, Berks County, for a possible, ongoing fraud involving an 85-year-old man.

State Police say the victim was contacted on July 1 by an individual(s) posing as officials with various federal agencies. The victim was told to purchase a large amount of gold from a known broker in Maryland, then contact the suspects to arrange for its safe keeping.

The purchase, in excess of $200,000, was prevented by law enforcement. The victim did, however, lose $30,000 during the scam.

State Police are continuing to investigate the theft.
