A 50th anniversary and Founders Day event is set for Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Dry Road Farm, 202 Highland Road, Lower Heidelberg Township. There will be displays and demonstrations, music by the Holt Sisters and an anniversary cake served to guests.

Iron pour

Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Union Township will celebrate its establishment as a national park by pouring iron on site Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.. Establishment Day programming begins at 1 p.m. with the start of the summer charcoal burn. The iron pour will be the first at Hopewell in 143 years.

Visitors will have the opportunity to create a sand mold to be poured in iron later that evening. Commemorative medallions will be cast during the event and made available for purchase at a later date. Learn more at www.nps.gov/hofu/index.htm.

The Berks County Parks and Recreation Department is presenting the following programs in August:

Saturday: Knee Deep in the Creek, 10 a.m.-noon, Angora Fruit Farm, Lower Alsace Township. Learn about the creek critters that call our waters home. Geared toward families with children ages 6 and older. Free but registration required.

Saturday: World Ranger Day, 10-1, Heritage Center, Bern Township. Learn what it takes to be a park ranger and gather stamps to earn a junior ranger badge. Free.

Aug. 8: Smokey’s Birthday Celebration, 10-2, Heritage Center. Visit with conservation and forestry vendors, play games, get Smokey Bear swag and learn about efforts to preserve forests and open spaces. Food truck on site. Free.

Aug. 9: Flannel concert rescheduled from July, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Gring’s Mill Recreation Area, Spring Township. Bring chairs and blankets. Food trucks will be on site. Parking and admission are free.

Aug. 12: Drop-In Art Camp, 9-noon, Heritage Center. For ages 7-12. Create under the canopy of the Union Canal’s trails. This is a drop-off program. Fee is $20 per child. Registration required.

Aug. 20: Garden Folklore, 7 p.m., Heritage Center. Join Sarah Linsenmaier for a lighthearted discussion on herbal and garden folklore, including culinary uses of herb favorites. Free but registration required.

Aug. 23: Folk Printed Fabrics, 1-3, Heritage Center. Learn historical block printing and stamping techniques and modern batik dyeing. For ages 16+. Fee is $15. Registration required.

The Reading Pops Orchestra is set to perform Saturday at 7 p.m. in Wyomissing High School in a free concert sponsored by the Wyomissing Recreation Board. The Pops will be led by Tyler Readinger, assistant conductor of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra. The theme of the program is the music of American television.

Pet loss support

Polish Picnic

St. Stephen the Martyr Polish National Catholic Church, Cumru Township, is holding its 50th annual Polish Picnic on Aug. 8 from noon to 6 p.m. at Willow Glen Park in Sinking Spring, rain or shine. The event promises a full day of polka music, pierogi, platzki, golumpki, kielbasa and more. Most items will be available to eat there or for takeout. The Eddie Foreman Orchestra will perform. There will be children’s activities, a bake sale and a raffle drawing.

Wyomissing’s Movies in the Park returns Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. with a screening of “Sing” in Wyomissing Hills Park.

Farm Festival

The Historic Dreibelbis Farm Festival is scheduled for Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the site near Virginville. Veterans salute

Wreaths Across America’s Mobile Education Exhibit will stop in Denver on Aug. 25 and 26. Wreaths for Fairview Cemetery is the host organization. The exhibit will be at Weaver’s Market, 2610 N. Reading Road, from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 and 10 to 5 on Aug. 26. The exhibit shares the stories of those who served and sacrificed in America’s military, organizers said. It  also serves as a gathering spot for Vietnam War veterans.
