Boil water advisory impacts nearly 800 water utility customers on 34 Scranton streets

A water main break in downtown Scranton — the second in 10 days — is closing businesses, city and county government buildings, and imposed a boil water advisory for roughly 770 Pennsylvania American Water hookups on 34 city streets.

A 24-inch main broke Monday morning on the 200 block of North Washington Avenue, the water utility said. Water was flowing down the street. Repairs were slated to begin Monday afternoon.

Businesses and local government buildings downtown closed en masse.

That included the Lackawanna County Courthouse and William J. Nealon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, The Marketplace at Steamtown, the Gateway Building, the Brixx Building, the county government center, the county’s community corrections building and the PenFed/Health and Human Services Building.

Scranton City Hall is also closed because of the water main break, city spokesman Chris Hughes said.

The break comes 11 days after another major break at the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street. A boil advisory was in place for nearly a week.
