A water main break along North Washington Avenue impacted over 700 Scranton residents, leaving many of them in need of outside resources to get clean water
SCRANTON, Pa. — The sounds of construction crews filled courthouse square in downtown Scranton on Monday when many residents were left without running water after a water main break around 10 am.
This comes after a different water main break back on July 16.
The Jermyn Apartments received a large donation of water cases for the building’s tenants free of charge.

Reginald Johnson chose to use only bottled water provided by Jermyn instead of the water in the tankers.
“We’re getting by. They’re helping us. They’ve been giving us water a lot. They made sure it kept on coming,” said Johnson.
Not only were Scranton residents impacted by the water main break.
Many buildings like City Hall were also left without running water, leading to the regular city council meeting set for 6:30 pm this Tuesday to be preemptively moved from City Hall to West Scranton Intermediate School.
All of the businesses in the Steamtown Market were also left without water.
The market’s management decided to close early at 6 pm.
“It really disrupts their day. We had people in dentist’s chairs, people getting coffee, and everything just shut off. Hopefully we get this resolved quickly; my fingers are crossed,” said Anthony Cali from Steamtown Market.
Just down the street, Scranton Fire Headquarters provided meals for residents who have had no access to clean, running water.
Many of the people stopping in had been left completely without any water and had no other option for finding any.
“If I need more, they told me I’m welcome to come back, so this is a saving grace for me,” said Mary Griffin from Scranton.
“They came out above and beyond for us, and I appreciate it,” said Shantha Jackson from Scranton.
Water tankers remain at the intersection of Linden Street and North Washington Avenue and at Biden Street and Spruce Avenue for residents to use free of charge.
A county official says that water services in the area are expected to be restored tomorrow morning.
