9-year-old injured in e-bike crash in southeastern Pennsylvania
A 9-year-old boy is recovering after an e-bike crash Saturday afternoon on McDade Boulevard in southeastern Pennsylvania, where concerned drivers and another rider stepped in to assist.
Surveillance video captures chaotic moments
Idris Brooker said his brother called him in shock around 1:15 p.m. after witnessing the young rider fall under the busy road near their side yard.
Employees at Produce Junction shared surveillance video that captured the chaotic moments. The footage shows a bike coming to a sudden stop as a semi-truck passes.
An older rider helped the boy onto the sidewalk, as he appeared unable to move his legs to get out of traffic. A driver in an SUV stopped behind them and ran to assist.
Emergency crews respond to injured child
According to the county dispatch report, police and fire officials were notified soon after that a 9-year-old had been injured. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, detoured traffic, and helped the two riders.
Concerns about road conditions and e-bike safety
Brooker expressed concerns about the dangers of riding bikes on McDade Boulevard. “No bike lane or nothing. As you can see, the paint is gone. It’s a lot of holes in the streets. It needs to be fixed,” he said.
He also noted the growing popularity of e-bikes in the area. “So many local businesses are selling e-bikes and it’s a thing now, sad to say,” Brooker said.
Police and fire officials have not yet provided an update on the boy’s condition. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
