Playing in Iowa for the first time in 36 yards, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre staged a comeback.

The RailRiders scored the game’s final six runs to rally for a 6-3 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night in the first game of a six-game series at Principal Park’s Sec Taylor Field in Des Moines.

Ernesto Martinez Jr. had three hits, including a two-run triple in the eighth inning that tied the game and a two-run single in the ninth that provided some insurance run. Oswaldo Cabrera also finished with three hits, while Marco Luciano, Yanquiel Fernandez and Kenedy Corona contributed two hits apiece. The RailRiders (17-9, 54-46) outhit the Cubs, 14-7. However, Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. went 0 for 4 to see his 16-game winning streak come to an end. He did extend his on-base streak to 25 games when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.

Trailing, 3-1, entering the eighth inning, Luciano led off with a single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Cabrera, who advanced to second on a wild pitch by Iowa reliever Antoine Kelly. With two outs, Tyler Hardman was hit by a pitch. Martinez followed by getting the green light on a 3-0 count and hitting a line drive off the left-center field wall for a triple that scored both Cabrera and Hardman to tie the game, 3-3.

Corona then put down a bunt on the next pitch and beat it out for a single to score Martinez and give the RailRiders a 4-3 lead.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Cabrera singled. Fernandez then hit a ball up the first-base line and reached on a single when pitcher Zac Leigh and first baseman Jonathon Long collided. Leigh left the game in favor of Eduarniel Nunez. After Hardman walked, Martinez lined a single to center that deflected off the glove of shortstop Ben Cowles and score Cabrera and Fernandez.

Kervin Castro yielded a leaoff single in the bottom of the ninth, but retired the next three batters to earn his fourth save and win it for Danny Watson (4-2), who pitched 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings with two strikeouts.

Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against RailRiders starter Dom Hamel. Owen Miller had a RBI double and Kevin Alcantara hit a sacrifice fly. Owen Ayers homered off reliever Chris Kean leading off the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-0.

Cubs starter Jace Beck, making just his second Triple-A start, blanked the RailRiders on four hits in five innings with no walks and two strikeouts. Jayden Murray relieved Beck in the sixth and the RailRiders broke through. J.C. Escarra doubled with one out, Cabrera singled with two outs and Fernandez doubled to score Escarra and cut the deficit to 3-1.

This was the first time since August 1990 that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre played in Iowa when they were the Red Barons. It is their first win in Iowa since July 27, 1989.

On Wednesday at 1:08 p.m., the series continues. Brendan Beck (8-2, 2.89) is scheduled to start for the RailRiders against Cubs No. 6 prospect, righthander Jaxon Wiggins (0-1, 9.19).
