The battle may have been difficult but the rewards are worth the effort.
Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic Battle of the Bands winner Gracie Jane Sinclair is a pop and country singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Mountain Top area. In addition to the grand prize, she and her band won the Battle of the Bands Audience Choice Award. Sinclair is also the winner of several Steamtown Music Awards and has opened for well-known artists, including Jelly Roll and Pat Benatar.
The Philharmonic is featuring her twice, once as a solo act and again with her band.
Philharmonic Executive Director Chason Goldschmitz helped judge the Battle of the Bands.
“They perform very well together,” he said. Sinclair is “just an incredibly outstanding singer, songwriter, and really just moves you and moves the audience.”
Sinclair’s first collaboration will be on Friday, Sept. 25, at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre. She will play two of her original works.
The concert will celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States and Luzerne County’s 240th anniversary. The program includes Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and “Lincoln Portrait”; new artistic multimedia projections from 240 years of local history by the Wilkes-Barré Preservation Society; and the Dance Theatre of Wilkes-Barre.
Two performers with Broadway credits, Luzerne County native Celia Hottenstein and her husband, Travis Taber, will also appear.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert start at $24. Student tickets are $16.
In “Philharmonic Goes Country” on Friday, April 9, also at the Kirby Center, Sinclair will be joined by her band and play a substantial amount of the program. Adult tickets start at $29, with student tickets available.
Orchestras routinely go beyond the bounds of classical music. A Philharmonic string trio will play George Gershwin songs and fiddle tunes at the Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Falls Twp. on Thursday, Sept. 10, for an event called Cider & Wild Strings. Movie music, rock, ’90s pop and work by Miles Davis are on the schedule over the next several months.

THEN: Gracie Jane Sinclair & the Band won the grand prize at the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic Battle of the Bands on Jan. 31, earning $5,000 and a spot on a Philharmonic stage.
NOW: Sinclair will perform with the Philharmonic in September and again with her whole band in April.
