On Wednesday, August 31, at 8:00 PM, we will experience “Reading the City,” a talk held from the heights of Guadalajara, led by essayist and literary researcher Juan Nepote.
Claudio Magris maintains that cities “are as much mothers as they are daughters of writers.” Cities that host and shelter, that reject, settings for being alone while surrounded by people and vice versa; implacable, yet almost never tedious, where the most implausible stories are invented and recorded. Some cities, under more or less mysterious spells, summon writers, artists, and scientists: Vienna, Paris, Rome, London, New York, Barcelona. Some cities fuel fiction, acting as midwives to stories. Others imprison their authors, only to later gravitate around their corpses: Prague and Kafka, Lisbon and Pessoa, Baltimore and Poe, Stockholm and Andersen. Yet other cities have been more veiled places for books, such as Guadalajara.
