READING, Pa. – An arrest was made in a deadly shooting in Berks County.
Reading police say they had to work quickly, as their suspect, 43-year-old Federico Perez Polanco, was trying to flee the country.
It was a very quick turnaround time from the time when the crime was committed to when he was apprehended. Now investigators are backtracking to learn more about what led up to the shooting.
Polanco is accused in the deadly shooting of a 32-year-old man in Reading.
The shooting took place around 3:40 a.m. Sunday at the 1400 block of North 5th Street. Police say surveillance video showed an altercation occurring between the victim and Polanco.
Investigators say the victim suffered gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
They say they tracked a vehicle driven by Perez Polanco leaving Reading and later in New Jersey.
He was apprehended through a coordinated effort with a number of agencies.
Investigators say he was trying to leave the country on a flight to the Dominican Republic.
He was taken into custody at the airport.
Perez Polanco is currently in custody in New Jersey, awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.
