The demolition of the former Edison Elementary School in the city of Erie is moving quickly, just one week after crews began tearing down the historic building.
The school, located on East Lake Road, served generations of Erie students after opening in 1931. Now, nearly a century later, much of the structure has come down as demolition crews continue work on the site.
The demolition will clear the way for several improvements, including new green space, a safer student drop-off and pickup loop, and a new playground to serve the adjacent campus.
As Erie News Now previously reported, the demolition project is expected to take between eight and 10 weeks to complete. That means crews will still be working when students return for the start of the new school year.
Students will begin classes at the new Edison Elementary School, located just south of the former building, on Monday, August 25.
The demolition marks the end of an era for one of Erie’s longtime neighborhood schools while making way for improvements designed to better serve future generations of students.
