The art of origami is helping community members make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer. Through the annual Cranes for Cancer event, participants are raising both funds and awareness for those impacted by the disease while gaining a deeper understanding of the mission of the Erie Cancer Wellness Center.
The event was inspired by the story of a young girl battling leukemia who folded 1,000 paper cranes in hopes of having her wish granted, a legend that has become a symbol of hope, healing and perseverance around the world.
During the fundraiser, participants purchased colorful paper cranes in honor or memory of loved ones affected by cancer. The display served as a powerful reminder of the many individuals and families touched by the illness, while creating a visual tribute filled with messages of love, remembrance and support.
In addition to honoring cancer survivors and those who have lost their lives to the disease, the event offered attendees a glimpse into the programs and services provided by the Erie Cancer Wellness Center. The organization offers resources designed to support patients and their families throughout their cancer journeys.
Organizers say every dollar raised through Cranes for Cancer will directly benefit Erie Cancer Wellness Center programs and help fund the construction of a new, larger facility. The expanded center is expected to open next February, allowing the organization to serve even more individuals in the community.
The Erie Cancer Wellness Center is also preparing to take the next step in its expansion plans, with officials expected to announce the location of the new facility in September.
