SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A brand-new Farmers Market in the City of Scranton officially opened up on Tuesday as part of a brand-new weekly tradition organized by nonprofit Scranton Forward.

It was a picture-perfect opening day for the new Electric City Farmers Market in the heart of Downtown Scranton at Christopher A. Doherty Park.

“This was always a topic, a kind of idea that we’ve been working on for quite some time that we wanted to see come to fruition,” Liz Baldi, business development director of Scranton Forward, said.

It’s a new project created by the local nonprofit Scranton Tomorrow and its business development director, Liz Baldi, to offer an opportunity for downtown residents to support local businesses and farmers in the City of Scranton.

Businesses featured at the Electric City Farmers Market included Hopkins Farms, Pierro Plant & Garden Center and Cypress House Bakery at St. Luke’s.

“Our first step was getting all of our downtown restaurants and eateries together for a meeting in the park and to meet with the farmers to kind of go through the logistics of what they want to see in a Farmer’s Market and how can we be most useful for them,” Baldi said.

One of the biggest reasons for creating this farmers market was to meet a need among downtown residents by offering a chance to purchase fresh local produce and more just steps from their doorstep.

“We have a growing residential population, and they don’t have a grocery store. So, we’re giving everybody the opportunity to shop local produce, beautiful plants and support the Cypress House Bakery at St. Luke’s as well,” Baldi said.

Speaking of the Cypress House Bakery at St. Luke’s, Day 1 of the Farmers Market was a big success for them, as they sold out of the products on display in the early hours.

“We are happy to be at the market because not only did we sell out of our product, but we are going to be here every Tuesday until September, maybe September 1st, and we are going to have so many more baked goods,” Ariana Kay, Baker at the Cypress House Bakery at St. Luke’s, said.

The Electric City Farmers Market will be held every Tuesday through at least September 8th, so if you missed your chance on Opening Day, they’ll be back at Doherty Park for the next six Tuesdays from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
