EXETER TWP., Pa. – It may not feel like it now, but fall will be here before we know it and sports that play in the cooler months are looking to welcome some new faces in Berks County.

69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Exeter Township with a rugby team looking for its next generation of players.

Shane Waddy, Founder and President of Reading Women’s Rugby Football Club, said the club was founded in 2019.

She said she wanted to start a club for women in the community so they could learn how to play rugby, join a team, and play around with members who become like family.

Vice President Reading Women’s Rugby Football Club Kelly Renninger said the participants are people who come from all walks of life: moms, teachers, librarians, and city workers.

She said the club is inclusive and has a family vibe.

“No matter where you come from, this is a place for you,” she said.

Secretary Lauren Chapin said the club is holding an annual meeting Wednesday night where anyone who is interested in joining or who has questions can come out and meet the team and get the info they need for the fall season.

Kathrynne Thomas, the club’s social media chair, said she played sports in high school. In college she didn’t want to commit to a sport, so she joined a club instead. That was the first time she felt like she was on a real team, she said.

She said people ages 18 to 50 are on the team. People from all over Berks County can join.

“We hang out, we have a good time,” she said.
