Erie’s MLK Center is entering a new chapter. Tonight, we’re hearing from new Executive Director John Paul Robinson about why he took the role and what he believes Erie’s young people need most right now.
For decades, the Martin Luther King Center has been a place where families turn for support, connection, and community. Now, under new leadership, the organization is looking to build on that mission at a time when many say local youth need more opportunities and engagement than ever.
John Paul Robinson says he’s coming into the position with a strong commitment to service and access.
“I am a champion for access and community. I stepped into this role because I think it’s a critical time for someone to come in, for us to come in, with a new way of working and serving our community,” Robinson said.
Robinson says the MLK Center already provides a wide range of services, including youth programs, family support services, childcare, senior programs, and a food pantry. But he says the center’s work with young people is especially important as they face new challenges in a rapidly changing world.
“We are providing resources. We are providing opportunities for our youth to become engaged, connected, to make meaningful relationships, and create dialogue amongst each other. Those are essential things for young people as they’re growing and navigating their lives,” Robinson said.
And he says the work isn’t stopping there. Robinson is already looking ahead, working to modernize the center’s facilities and expand its services. The goal, he says, is to meet more needs across the community and reach more young people who rely on the MLK Center every day.
A new director, a renewed vision, and a commitment to building on the center’s long history of serving Erie families.
