Scott Gower is returning to a position in high school athletics.
On Wednesday night, Gower was appointed as the athletic director at Abington Heights High School. Before working for the last three years as a sales professional at BSN Sports, a sports apparel and equipment company, he served as athletic director at Scranton Prep and at Keystone College.
Gower fills the vacancy left by Enrico Mastroianni’s resignation to become the Director of Athletics at Penn State Scranton in early July.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join the Abington Heights community at a time when they are coming off a historic year of athletic success,” Gower, 42, said. “I want to thank the school board and administration for the opportunity to be part of the athletic program that they support through the resources they provide to the student-athletes and coaches.
“Abington Heights has a deep tradition of excellence both in the classroom and on the athletic fields and courts. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, families, staff, and community and working with them to continue that tradition.”
During his time at Scranton Prep, Gower not only directed successful athletic programs, but he also served in leadership roles with the Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association. He was the president of tennis, swimming, baseball, wrestling, and boys’ soccer and was co-president of track and field.
“My goal is to support our student-athletes, coaches, and programs while promoting a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and pride both on and off the field,” Gower said. “I love interscholastic athletics and the values that it teaches our students. I am excited to reconnect with the members of the LIAA and work closely with them again. They are all great people who work hard for common goals. As athletic directors, we all have outstanding student-minded goals. I’d also like to get back into some of those leadership roles to help the organization.”
At Keystone College, Gower started in the spring of 2022 and resigned in the fall of 2023. He directed the athletic department that included eight men’s programs, seven women’s programs, and co-ed cheerleading. The Giants competed at an NCAA Division III level in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
The football program, which launched in 2021, was a member of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference in its first two seasons and joined the Landmark Conference in 2023.
A graduate of Lackawanna Trail, Gower competed in baseball and wrestling and ran cross-country. As a student at Keystone, where he studied sports recreation and management, he played baseball and tennis. He earned a master’s degree at West Virginia University.
Gower and his wife, Kelly, and two children, daughter Rylie, 12, and son Owen, 11, reside in Clarks Summit.
“Living in the district, with my family, I am invested in the school,” Gower said. “That is important to me. I am excited to be returning and working in high school athletics.”
