Thousands of sunflowers are expected to reach peak bloom in Girard as one of the region’s most popular summer traditions returns, drawing visitors from across northwestern Pennsylvania.
The annual sunflower celebration gives guests the opportunity to stroll through acres of blooming flowers while taking part in a variety of special events throughout the festival.
This year’s lineup includes a performance by the Erie Philharmonic String Ensemble, along with several hands-on activities. Visitors can participate in a sunflower painting class, where each attendee will decorate a sunflower-themed serving tray, or join a pottery workshop to create a sunflower-inspired charcuterie tray.
The festival also serves as the backdrop for the debut of a new locally produced spirit with ties to Girard.
The Wilds Sonshine Factory has partnered with the Hagen History Center to create 1898 Bayfront Reserve, a limited-edition spirit crafted from sunflowers grown in Girard.
The first bottles from the inaugural run will be introduced during a private tasting event hosted by the Hagen History Center in mid-August. Customers who preordered the spirit will receive the remaining bottles before it becomes available to the general public.
