During the recent tournament at the Scranton Tennis Club, top-seeded Dan Fowler came from behind in both sets to capture the Men’s 50 and Over Singles title over 2nd-seeded Don Monroe 7-6(5), 7-5.
Fowler trailed 2-5 in the first set and recovered to send it to a tiebreaker, which he won 9-7. Monroe served again for the second set at 5-4, but was broken and lost the last three games. The contest lasted 3 hours with numerous long rallies.
In semifinal action, Fowler defeated Stephen Hague 6-0, 6-2, while Monroe ousted John Sinclair 6-3, 6-0.
Unseeded Robby Azzarelli and Amishi Amit completed their run of upsets, knocking off 4th-seeded Scott and Chris Wiss 6-3, 6-2 to take the Mixed A Doubles title.
To reach the final, Azzarelli and Amit knocked out 2nd-seeded John and Nicole Sinclair 7-6(5), 6-2 in the quarterfinals and eliminated 3rd-seeded Don Monroe and Kelly Arp 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, the Wisses edged top-seeded Johnny Sinclair and Grace Lennox 6-2, 4-6, (12-10).
Jody Jackman defeated Connie Weiss 6-0, 6-2 to take the Women’s 50 and Over Singles title. In the Mixed B Doubles tournament, Amit and Arpana Asawa were too consistent for Joe Vinson and Joan Davis, taking the title by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
In the Mixed A Doubles consolation final, John and Nicole Sinclair overpowered Dan Zych and Nicole Kutos 6-0, 6-2. Jerry Hahn and Aggie Izolt won the Mixed B Doubles consolation with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Lalos and Joan Theilgard.
John Weiss was the tournament director, assisted by Nicole Sinclair.
