OBITUARY
Joseph J. Flanagan Jr., of Moosic, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Geisinger Community Medical Center, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.
Joe was the beloved husband of the former Bettiann DeSarno. Together, they shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage and were looking forward to celebrating their 61th wedding anniversary on October 9. Their life together was built on love, family, and countless memories that will remain with their family forever.
Born in Scranton, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Kelly Flanagan. Always quick with a joke and smile, he enjoyed always being the life of the party. He was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in West Scranton, Class of 1957, and proudly served his country with the United States Army. Joe spent his professional career in finance and retired as District Manager of Household Finance Corporation, taking great pride in his successful 36 year career with HFC.
A devout Catholic, Joe was a faithful parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish, formerly St Joseph’s. He found great joy in spending time with his family and enjoying a round of golf. He was a proud member of Elmhurst Country Club for many years, where he made many lasting friendships and enjoyed a game he truly loved.
Joe will be remembered most as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved nothing more than quality time with his family, especially his 3 sons and 6 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Bettiann, he is survived by his three sons, Joe; Greg and his wife, Holly; and Scott and his wife, Michelle; and his beloved grandchildren, Riley & Reese (Joe), Lucy & Audrey (Greg), and Lily & Luke (Scott), who brought him immense joy and happiness.
He was preceded in death by his two beloved sisters, Kay Craig and Judy Peacock.
Family and friends are invited to attend Joe’s viewing on Wednesday, August 12, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul McDonnell, O.S.J. Burial with military honors will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
