As Erie’s Public Schools prepare to welcome students back for the new academic year, Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs says the district is ready and focused on creating an environment that supports student success.
A major focus this year will be the implementation of two new district-wide policies aimed at reducing distractions and promoting a stronger learning atmosphere. The changes include a bell-to-bell ban on electronic devices during the school day and a standardized dress policy across all schools.
Dr. Gibbs said the district has been encouraged by the strong community response during a series of parent engagement sessions held throughout the summer. During those meetings, students modeled approved clothing options under the new dress policy, while parents had opportunities to ask questions and learn more about how the changes will be implemented.
According to Gibbs, feedback from families has been largely positive, with many parents expressing support for creating a more focused classroom environment.
The superintendent also pointed to data from other school districts that have adopted similar cell phone restrictions. She said those districts have reported 13% to 20% increases in exam scores, highlighting the potential academic benefits of limiting student access to electronic devices during the school day.
The district plans to continue engaging families before classes begin. One additional parent engagement session is scheduled, and a series of open houses will give students and parents a chance to prepare for the upcoming school year.
District leaders say the new policies are designed to help students stay focused, minimize distractions, and create a consistent environment for learning across Erie’s Public Schools.
