Israeli occupation forces carried out fresh incursions across the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, raiding the Balata refugee camp east of Nablus and demolishing a three-story residential structure in the village of Al-Ma’sara, south of Bethlehem. According to an Anadolu correspondent, military patrols swept through the camp and adjacent neighbourhoods, with infantry units deployed along Al-Madaris Street inside the camp. While several homes were searched, no immediate reports of arrests or confrontations emerged. In the Bethlehem district, the demolition—conducted under the pretext of missing construction permits—forced three Palestinian families from their homes in Area C, a zone that remains under full Israeli administrative and security control under the 1995 Oslo II accord, covering roughly 60 percent of the West Bank.
Escalating demolitions and displacement
The latest demolitions add to a growing tally of Israeli actions against Palestinian properties. During the first half of 2026 alone, Israeli authorities carried out 341 demolitions, destroying 740 structures and affecting 923 Palestinians, while issuing 254 demolition or stop-work notices, according to the Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission. The campaign has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups, who view it as part of a broader strategy to tighten Israel’s grip on occupied territory and undermine Palestinian presence in strategic areas.
Analyst warns of systematic land seizure
In a detailed analysis published by Haaretz, military analyst Amos Harel asserted that Israeli forces and police have “completely lost control of the West Bank in recent months.” Harel argued that occupiers, backed by ministers and Knesset members from the ruling coalition, are seizing land in Area B—where Palestinian civil administration is supposed to function—by establishing dozens of farms and outposts while systematically expelling Palestinian communities. He accused the army and police of either ignoring these activities or, in some instances, actively cooperating with settler attacks. “The final goal is to expel Palestinians and seize more land,” Harel wrote, describing a dual system comprising a political wing of officials and a military wing of ground-level operatives.
West Bank violence surges amid Gaza war
Since the onset of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza on October 8, 2023, violence in the West Bank has intensified dramatically, with near-daily raids, arrests, home demolitions, arson attacks on mosques, land levelling, forced displacement, and illegal settlement expansion. Palestinians contend that these actions are designed to pave the way for formal annexation of the West Bank, effectively foreclosing any viable path to a two-state solution under relevant UN resolutions.
