Called to a Lane Street home on Monday to check on two individuals who hadn’t been heard from in a week, police discovered a grisly scene.
In a locked bedroom, a troubled daugher shot and killed her father, then used a different gun to take her own life.
At a Wednesday press conference, Police Chief Edward Boettcher voice shook as he described being called to the Lane Street residence at about 11 a.m. and initially being unable to enter the building.
Once a family member gained access to the residence through a window, officers searched the home only to find a locked master bedroom door, which they were unable to immediately access.
That’s when officers called in the borough’s fire department to assist. In the bedroom, police found Anthony Bruno, 68, his daughter, Samantha Bruno, 32, and a family dog, all dead.
They found a .38 caliber special revolver, a 9 mm handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun, in the bedroom.
Pennsylvania State Police Forensics Unit arrived to process the scene and notified the Lackawanna County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators determined Samantha Bruno shot her father in the head twice with the revolver, before shooting herself once with the shotgun, police said.
District Attorney Brian Gallagher said family members indicated Samantha Bruno struggled with addiction and mental health issues for several years.
The results of a toxicology examination for Samantha Bruno is pending, officials said.
