Some downtown Scranton eateries thwarted by water main breaks and streetscape work are getting creative.

The Hispanic bakery 3 Tiers started a “Midnight Munchies” delivery service and may expand it to the daytime. Northern Light Espresso Bar is joining Uber Eats. Chef von & Mom is taking a borrowed barbecue smoker to the Circle Drive-In in Dickson City on Sunday.

“I’m looking for more business out of business hours,” said Genesis Vega, owner of the 349 N. Washington Ave. bakery, “so that we can bring more income, just because of all the construction situations here in downtown Scranton and all the water main break situations.”

Midnight Munchies is in just its second week and Vega has twice sold out her entire inventory, she said.

Delivery is available from 6 p.m. to midnight on Tuesdays through Saturdays within a 10-mile radius for a $5 fee, and is free for orders of $20 or more. Her Facebook posts stress that all tips go solely to the delivery person.

The menu might include quesitos, a cheese pastry, either plain or with guava; French macarons and a variety of cookies and cupcakes.

So far, most customers are people who can’t make it to the bakery during regular hours. Vega expects a surge of business when the colleges are in session.

On top of all the construction work, Northern Light Espresso Bar, 536 Biden St. on Courthouse Square, was damaged during a recent water main break. A Tuesday Facebook post announced that it is joining the delivery service Uber Eats on Wednesday afternoon.

Award-winning chef Ryan von Smith owns the restaurant Chef von & Mom at 501 Linden St. He has been vocal about his frustration. Last week, he used multiple obscenities, with some letters replaced with asterisks, to denounce the city on his personal Facebook page. He could not be reached for comment.

He has done off-site events before. On Sunday the Circle Drive-In flea market will come at a good time. He will serve barbecue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Facebook, he thanked TMG Pits for the use of the smoker.
