SALEM TWP., WAYNE CO. (WOLF)_ — A Lake Ariel man was killed and two people from Scranton were injured in a head-on crash late Thursday night in Wayne County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
The crash happened around 11:41 p.m. Aug. 14 on Hamlin Highway, Route 590, about 79 feet east of Goose Pond Road in Salem Township.
State police said a 2010 Subaru Impreza driven by Keith R. Havenstrite Jr., 36, of Lake Ariel, was traveling east in the westbound lane of Hamlin Highway.
At the same time, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling west in the westbound lane.
According to the crash report, the Subaru struck the Jeep head-on around the 12 o’clock position, causing disabling damage to both vehicles.
Police said Havenstrite was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries.
Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell responded to the scene and pronounced Havenstrite dead.
The Jeep was driven by Kevin J. Martinell, 51, of Scranton, who suffered a suspected minor injury, according to state police.
His passenger, Janet R. Roberts, 79, of Scranton, suffered a suspected serious injury.
Police said Martinell and Roberts were both wearing seat belts. They were taken by Hamlin Fire and Rescue Company to Geisinger Community Medical Center for treatment.
The crash report lists Havenstrite’s vehicle with a primary violation of driving on the right side of the roadway. No charges are listed in the report.
Hamlin Highway was closed for approximately two hours following the crash.
The Ledgedale Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Ariel Volunteer Fire Company, Hamlin Fire and Rescue Company, Hamlin Ambulance and Pennsylvania Ambulance assisted at the scene.
