Celebrate Erie continued Saturday with perfect summer weather, live entertainment, and plenty of activity throughout downtown Erie.
State Street was filled with color as local artists took part in the annual Chalk Walk, creating large-scale murals directly on the street.
Artists say the chalk is ground down and mixed into a paint, helping the artwork last longer.
The artists completed their drawings by 5:30 p.m., giving members of the public the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces.
Local artist Sydney Dietz said the event has changed significantly since she first began participating at age 14, but she believes those changes have helped the celebration continue to grow.
“Erie is a growing city, and having everyone come down, celebrate, and join the community is extremely important,” Dietz said. “Having our art shown—I think—is a lot of fun.”
Dietz said she enjoys seeing the event evolve while maintaining traditions that bring people back year after year.
“I love seeing change. I think it helps the event continue to grow and move forward, but they do keep a lot of the same things, too, which is really good, because that’s what keeps people coming back,” she said.
The winner of the Chalk Walk competition will be announced on the mainstage at 6:30 p.m., before Daytona Beach 2000 takes the stage.
The Plain White T’s are scheduled to headline Saturday night’s Celebrate Erie concert at 8 p.m.
