More than a dozen people displaced after a fire at an apartment complex in Scranton.
Officials say crews were called around 5 pm to Amos Towers on Jefferson Avenue for a fire that started in one of the apartments.
The Scranton Fire Department says the sprinkler system contained the fire; however, crews worked for hours trying to shut off the water.
Several apartments had heavy water damage, forcing more than a dozen residents to evacuate.
Six people were taken to a motel, and family members took several others.
Much of the damage had been cleaned up by Saturday afternoon by Servpro, said resident Marla Zabada. The building’s interior Saturday looked very different than how it appeared less than 24 hours earlier.
“It looked like a warzone,” Zabada said. “It was just horrible…water gushing all over the place; at least an inch or two of water on the floor, which was all muddy and dirty, like I said, ceilings coming down. When I first walked in, it was just frightening. It was frightening for me.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
