Ten years ago, the PIAA increased the number of classifications from four to six to create more opportunities to compete for state championships.
Since that adjustment, teams from the Lackawanna Football Conference enjoyed success in the expanded District 2 playoffs.
LFC teams won 43 of the 56 championships awarded in the 10 seasons. The conference already won one title this season with Lackawanna Trail (10-1) winning in Class 1A and playing Tri-Valley (7-4), the District 11 representative in the subregional, on Friday at 7 p.m. Wilkes-Barre Area (7-4), which hosts Williamsport (6-5), a District 4 representative, is the District 2 Class 6A champion in the subregional.
An LFC team will also win gold in Class 5A, where Delaware Valley (6-5) plays at Abington Heights (9-2) on Friday at 7 p.m., and in Class 2A, with Dunmore (8-3) playing at Lakeland (10-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Top-seeded North Pocono (11-0) is hosting No. 3 Dallas in the Class 4A final, and third-seeded Scranton Prep (6-5) plays at No. 1 Berwick (11-0) in Class 3A. Both games are Friday at 7 p.m.
Delaware Valley and Lackawanna Trail won the most District 2 championships since the expansion.
Delaware Valley won the first six titles in Class 6A (2016-2021) and then won two in a row after dropping to Class 5A (2022, 2023) based on its enrollment.
With its Class 1A title this season, Lackawanna Trail won seven championships in Class 1A (2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025) and one in Class 2A (2021). The Lions are also the only LFC team to advance to a PIAA final in the last nine years, reaching the Class 1A title game in 2018.
Scranton Prep earned seven championships in Class 3A (2016-2018 and 2021-2024), with its only loss in the postseason coming in 2019 to eventual PIAA champion Wyoming Area.
Dunmore won six Class 2A championships (2016-2020, 2023) in nine seasons. The Bucks played in eight championship games. There was no final game in Class 2A in 2020 because of adjustments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic when Dunmore earned the championship.
Abington Heights and Lakeland enter this weekend as LFC teams to win multiple District 2 championships since the move to six classes. The Comets won the Class 5A championship in 2016 and in 2024. Lakeland won the Class 3A championship in 2020 and the Class 2A title in 2022.
North Pocono, which won the District 2 Class 4A championship in 2016, can join the Comets and Chiefs if it defeats Dallas on Friday.
Valley View has four District 2 Class 4A championships (2017, 2018, 2021, 2024) in the last nine years, and Old Forge won three Class 1A titles. Wallenpaupack won one in Class 5A (2018), and Riverside won a championship in Class 2A (2024).
Wyoming Valley West has the most titles from the Wyoming Valley Conference. The Spartans won four district championships in Class 5A (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021).
Dallas heads into its championship matchup with North Pocono with two titles (2019, 2023) since 2016. In both years, the Mountaineers reached the PIAA Class 4A final.
Wilkes-Barre Area won the last three Class 6A championships; Crestwood won Class 4A championships in 2020 and 2022.
Wyoming Area won the 2019 championship and the only PIAA title for District 2 since the move to six classifications. Hazleton Area won a title in Class 6A (2022).
