OBITUARY
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joyce M. Capone, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Joyce passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at the age of 85.
Joyce was born on July 2, 1941, at the State Hospital in Scranton, Pa., the eldest daughter of Glenn and Marion (Joyce) Huthmaker. A lifelong resident of the Scranton area, she recently moved to Dunmore.
A 1959 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Joyce worked in several positions throughout her career, spending most of her years at Central Warehouse, where she made many lasting friendships. On December 11, 1961, she married her true love, George A. Capone. Together, they built a loving home where, for 57 years, family and friends gathered for holidays, celebrations, and countless memories.
Joyce was a longtime and active member of the German American Federation Club at Waldorf Park, where she belonged for 55 years. She held several leadership positions, including Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, and most recently Second Vice President. She especially enjoyed the clubs events, and working the door on Friday Tiki nights brought her great joy.
Joyce will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and above all, her strength. Fiercely independent, she took pride in doing things her own way. There wasn’t a vehicle she couldn’t drive – and look out if you got in her way! Her strong spirit and determination were unmistakably Joyce and will always be remembered by those who loved her.
She cherished time with her family, especially lunches with her siblings and outings with her children and grandchildren. The beach was one of her favorite places, and she treasured family vacations to the shore and trips to Florida with George. In her quiet time, Joyce enjoyed puzzles, solitaire, and tending to her plants.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Capone of Scranton, who passed away in December 2018.
She is survived by her brother, Jay Huthmaker; her sisters, Dawn Conway, Gay Clifford, Jill Rudalavage, and Lisa Rutherford; her children, Barbara (Patrick) Sheppleman, Ronald (Lori) Capone, Deanna (Kerry) Atlee, and Darlene Thomas; her grandchildren, Heather (Tim) Wertz, Mark Calvanese, Aaron Atlee (fiance, Jenn), Kyle Atlee, Ashley Capone, Kayley Capone, and Justin Thomas (girlfriend, Taylor); and her great-grandchildren, Makayla Atlee, Carter Atlee, Scarlett Atlee, Delaney Atlee, and Kennedy Thomas.
Family and friends are invited to join Joyce’s loved ones for a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Waldorf Park Social Club, 13 Waldorf Lane, Scranton, Pa.
Arrangements and cremation are under the care of Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., Scranton, Pa.
