‘1-mile Firecracker Race’ in Scranton honors late boxing trainer Paul O’Malley

Runners in Lackawanna County honored late boxing trainer Paul “Hook” O’Malley in a charity race, with proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society.

SCRANTON, Pa. — On Sunday, in Lackawanna County, runners took off in memory of Paul “Hook” O’Malley. 

The “1-mile Firecracker Race” along North-South Road in Scranton honored the late local boxing trainer who succumbed to cancer back in 1992. 

Organizers say the race is a testament to the great love and devotion O’Malley’s family and friends have for his memory and the cause of helping those who are battling cancer. 

“It feels good giving back to the community and supports those that are in that critical condition. It’s a good support for them,” said Abass Rabo from Wilkes-Barre.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Lackawanna County Unit of the American Cancer Society.
